Contact Social Security

Social Security by phone

1-800-772-1213 is the nationwide number for Social Security.

This is an automated line with recorded information, however, you can also speak to a representative between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on week days. If those times are inconvenient for you, a recording is available and you may find the answer to your question without speaking to anyone. You can no longer call your local office for an appointment. They changed it years ago, but it's not a problem... really!

Social Security website

This is a link to the Social Security website. I will also point to their website in my articles, so that you'll find what you need here, and can back it up with their site, if you need to.

When to call Social Security

The best time to call Social Security is NOT Monday, when most folks call. It's best to limit your phone calls or visits to other days... you'll make the connection much happier for yourself! If you are deaf or hard of hearing, Social Security also has a TTY number, 1-800-325-0778, which is available from 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on week days.

When to Apply for benefits

You should apply three months before age 62, if you intend to start benefits at 62.
