Disability: It can happen in an instant!

My husband and I actually did not prepare for the time when we would be unable to work a regular job.

My husband Don had a stroke at a rather young age. He was able to improve and work only some. This greatly impacted our finances. after about six years he was hit with a major critical stroke which almost took his life.

That changed both our lives. He lived in a nursing home until 18 months after the stroke. We had lost every thing. I did not work since I cared for him every day just like a job.

After he was discharged we lived with family while I was on full time care giver duty. After 5 years I was able to get us into an apartment for the disabled on low income.

We have been on this journey for over 16 years now. Does anyone have a similar situation as this ?

Things will get better for you!

You have had a tough time. I am praying things start improving for you and your husband.

I am only care giver for me 92 year old mother who has COPD and a lung tumor diagnosed last year. You know that care giving takes a physical and emotional toll. Please do what you can to take care of yourself. I find reading or listening to music is relaxing and you are still ready of you're needed.

I hope things improve for both of you. Accept help from wherever it is offered. Many states have free assistance to relieve you and let you go out for respite, please check into this.
