Retiree from Finger Lakes area of NY

by Pat
(New York)

Hi,

I'm from the Fingerlakes area of NY State. I have recently retired.

I'm finding that I have a lot of time on my hands and need to keep busy. It's difficult to figure out what to do to keep active after many years of working.

My husband retired 8 years ago and seems to have adjusted.

I've been a little depressed lately and need some advise from other retirees.

what to do when depressed
by: Maureen

Hi i know what you mean about being depressed, i was widowed six months ago after nursing my husband for twelve months.

Being 73 years old (but young at heart and very active) i moved back to my old area, thinking i would be ok with my old friends, but alas they are all couples and though they accept me i feel as though i am still on my own.

So every day i walk down the town to the beach walk along the beaches (we have 4 near on).

I have joined a quilting class, i read, go swimming, i have joined a club where ladies can go
and have a drink of any kind on their own but you soon get chatting to different people.

i also enjoy going out with my family for meals, i have two daughters who don,t live too far away.

hope this has helped, i would like to hear from you again best wishes Maureen

Hi Neighbor
by: Carol

I live near Lake Ontario in Rochester, NY.

I'm 69 (soon to be 70). I swim every morning at the Y and I have to say that I love that more than anything. The water is warm and they have a huge whirlpool that warms your bones after you swim. Have met some very nice women at the pool.

Other than that I have very little to do. I LOVE emailing my pen pals and am always open to a new one. I love reading (especially suspense novels), I want to start a vegetable garden in the summer but as you well know, winters in this area are no fun. We travel when we can.

Mostly we go to Florida for a while in the winter. We can't go this winter so I'll be around all winter.

I love to cook and am always looking for new recipes. I enjoy having company for dinners, lunches and brunches.

Have a great husband, 2 daughters and 2 granddaughters that are 10 and 14. They keep me amused.

Please write if you want. After all we're neighbors! Love, Carol

Hi

I live in New York also - I thik maybe about 2 hours from where you are! Not far from our capital, albany.

I am going to be 71 (January), and my husband and I live in a senior citizen mobile home park near the Hudson River.

I like to walk, love corresponding with other people my age, like to garden, write poetry and stories, like to sing.

I have three daughters, one granddaughter and four grandsons.

I have two sisters and a brother.
We love being retired and enjoy our days!

Glad to hear from you

Hi Maureen,

I live in Rochester (on Lake Ontario). Its cold dark and depressing in the winter but at least we have had NO SNOW yet and its almost Jan.

I swim 6 days a week and try to keep busy. I take a nap in the afternoon for about an hour. Probably because we're up at 5:00 am every day. Don't ask!!!

Hope to hear from you again at my email address.

Love,
Carol

Too much time
by: Carol

Hi Pat,

I go swimming 6 mornings a week. I've met some wonderful friends at the pool and it takes up the whole morning. I come home and sometimes take a nap or read and then we have lunch and sometimes we go grocery shopping or in the summer we do gardening. Right now its very cold in Rochester.

We stay in and either read or watch movies on t.v. We get Showtime and Netflix. Its our big luxury. Then I make dinner and at night we always find a good movie to watch in the winter.

I enjoy having friends over for dinner. Join clubs or classes. I hear that knitting is very soothing. There are photography classes and so many others. Most schools here offer free classes if you're over 65.

I also enjoy pen pals and being on the web. Look around for things.

Good luck. Carol

new friend

I am 62 years old and want a new friend. I live in rural Kentucky and guess I am considered a hillbilly. I really prefer snail mail... more personal. Want to strike up an aquaintence?

Pen Friend Pat
by: Mary

Hi Pat--My name is Mary and I am 61 years old with a husband of 42 yrs. and 2 adult children and 5 grandkids. We have both been retired for 8 years and the adjustment can be difficult. It's hard to go from a structured life to one where anything goes. Only advice is to find things you are interested in and go for it. Do something just for yourself. I noticed that you live in NYS. We live on Long Islande but own a rural cabin in Windsor NY. Would love to "talk" more. Hope to hear from you.

To All of you who wrote to me

Love,
Carol

Hello Finger Lakes area of NY LADY. Sounds beautiful to me that area. Would love to hear about your retirement. I am a retired decorator of 30 plus years. I also play piano where I live with appx. 70 people in assisted living. I had strokes and a brain operation almost 10 years ago. I am 71 now. I would love to exchange ideas on retirement with you. I love being retired. The first 6 months were very difficult for me to adjust. Sandy B
