Seeking senior penpals

by Maureen
(St Ives Cornwall England)

I am a 72 year old widow, i have three children and six grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Being recently widowed has left me very fragile.

After saying that my outlook on life is very young, my grandaughters won't let me dress old and borrow my clothes.

My hobbies are quilting, walking, reading, swimming, and using my computer.

I live in St Ives Cornwall, England and would love to hear from anyone who is just looking for a pen pal.

by: Elle

Hi Maureen,

My name is Elle. I'm 67 and live in California, USA. My passtime is TV, computer, listening to music (like a bit of all kinds), have always loved reading but have baby cataracts now and do very little. My favorite books are those of James A. Michener & James Herriot. Love movies; North & South with the beautiful Richard Armitage is my favorite right now.

Both sides of my family were from England. My maternal grandfather would talk about his life there when he was young. Always hoped to travel there, but.............

Now I love watching travel videos on TV & computer about Europe and Great Britain. (and watching British movies & mysteries....my favorites are Midsomer Murders and Foyle's War).

Sad to say I'm one of the over-weight Americans everyone talks about. Really gained after I developed knee problems which limits my walking very far. That plus the fact I really love food doomed me. But still have high hopes I'll finally talk myself into behaving !!!!!!!!!!!

I'm slightly disabled but able to do a little volunteer work; some paperwork and mailings for an organization called Alliance for Aging.

Living in an apartment building whose tenants are elderly and disabled, I run small errands for a few and also help our three blind people. My mother lost her eyesight at 35 so I'm rather sympathetic towards them; help them paying their bills, read their mail, etc.

I don't have children; raised a step-daughter. She was 5 when we became a family and lived at home until she was 20. She's 54 & lives in Texas taking care of her biological mother who is 80 and in bad health.

If you think we have enough in common to keep up a running conversation, please write. I'd love to hear from you. Elle

Dear Maureen,

I am your age and was suddenly widowed in Jan 2009. I was a walking zombie for about 9 months and still have many sad times; I hope we can help comfort each other. I am a retired Civil Servant and have a married daughter and two grandsons.

Like you, I enjoy walking, the computer, and reading. My other hobbies are herbs, houseplants, trying to keep my deceased husband's garden of prize roses alive, drawing, painting (currently studying watercolors), writing (especially poetry), and taking classes for general knowledge.

I enjoy my dollhouse and have a Private Pilot's License. I live in a single-family house, and my pets are two dogs, 3 cats, and tropical fish.

Please eMail me and send a photo. Bettyann

English heritage in US

Hello Maureen,

It would be so nice to have a penpal in England!

I was born and raised in the US and my great-grandparents emigrated from England. I have two senior families I correspond with on occasion: one in Northamptonshire, and the other in Bedfordshire. They are not online though, so I ring them or write via the post.

My favorite TV viewings are the BBC reruns of Keeping Up Appearances and As Time Goes By.

I am mostly retired but still paint. I was an art teacher. I do not have time to devote to daily writing but would like to keep in touch about once or twice a week.

I am also widowed and just turned 70.

Do hope to hear from you soon. Diana

Hello Maureen,

It was so good to hear from you. My distant relatives in Bedfordshire recently went on holiday and sent a postcard to me of the Truro Cathedral and the beautiful terracotta sculptures by George Tinworth. So beautiful!

So sorry you lost your dear husband. My husband died very suddenly of a heart attack just before Christmas 2004. I miss him terribly and always will. The grieving does get better though. I now recall our fun and happy times and smile. I also still shed tears on occasion in the quietness. My prayers are with you.

Because I am new to this site, I cannot figure out how to reply to your reply to me except to find you in the list of Senior Pen Pals and reply. Is there another way to reply?

Hope you stay in touch. There are busy days in my life so may miss a day or two of communication, but always welcome new friends and promise I shall reply eventually.

Best wishes,
Diana

Hi Maureen, My heart goes out to you. From Canada
by: Lucille

I ALSO LOST THE LOVE OF MY LIFE ALMOST 7 MONTHS AGO AND WONDER SOME DAYS HOW TO GO ON. WE ONLY HAD 12 YEARS TOGETHER. WE LOVED TO TRAVEL AND WENT TO HAWAII TWICE. AND EASTERN CANADA. ALSO OUT TO THE FAR WEST TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN.

THE ONE HIGHLIGHT OF ALL OF THIS IS I HAVE BECOME VERY CLOSE WITH HIS DAUGHTER AND HER DAUGHTERS.

I KNOW SOMEHOW WITH THE LOVE OF OUR FAMILIES AND GRANDCHILDREN WE WILL CARRY ON AS I KNOW OUR BELOVED HUSBANDS WOULD WANT US TO DO.

MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU.

Hi Betty Annne

I was so pleased to hear from you, It would be lovely to keep in touch with you.

You must be very brave to fly a plane, I am afraid i don't like flying at all although I do fly to different countries on holiday and don't let it spoil my holiday.

I live in a beautiful town in Cornwall (St Ives) we have four beaches within walking distance the nearest is just seven minuets walk away from my home.

Hope to hear from you again. Best Wishes for the New Year Maureen.

Hi Maureen.....

sorry to hear of your recent loss. I too lost my husband (accident) 12 years ago and the grief sometimes was overwhelming but thanks to my close family and friends I did get by.

Today I am health and active and live now in 2 places. One an in-law apt with my son and his wife and the other at a trailer park for 6 mths with a park trailer .... my nephew whom I am very close with owns and runs the park with his wife and 2 boys and I assist too.

Its a fun time and I love it. Never thought my life would change so much.. I was widowed at 50 and lots of changes have happened..

I am 62 now with 3 beautiful grandchildren, but on my own a lot.

You too will get a different life, and I hope you will adapt to it. Like to hear from you.

Take care....Jill
