Senior Pen Pal: 34 year old writer on my second book

by Robert Gould
(Calgary AB, Canada)

Well, I am 34 years old, my name is Robert, and I am writing my second book. It is a compilation piece. The book is about the lives, lessons, struggles and adventures of todays seniors. I want to know what you have learned during your time on this earth, and I want to share that with the world. The criteria for submission is simple, you must be over 70 years of age. This is your chance to tell the world what has become the defining factors in your life and what the things are that you have come to learn as valuable in a world filled with hate and wars.

Family becomes increasingly more important as we get older. Yet family move away rather readily and often there isn't the money for the promised visits.

Younger people are increasingly not accommodating visitors with double beds in the kids rooms, so the cost increases and the number of visits decrease.

Some members have "pet free" houses and the people who are 1,000 miles away don't have any place to leave their pets for that length of time. Who wants to leave a dog that is there for them every day in a cage for two weeks to visit the relative that hardly ever calls?

High school kids don't think about their cousins when they are visiting or are local. They aren't taught to.

Once I traveled 1,000 miles when I was in high school to see relatives and the person closest to my age went out with a local friend and didn't invite me. An uncle watched tv while most of the family talked.

Siblings think I should be the clone of their wives, both of whom I have nothing in common with.

Now we are older, not yet retired, but older. Most of the family now regrets that it has splintered so badly.

Sometimes people have to think about their social obligations earlier in life and send the "thank you's before they are 6 months late.

The tv should have been turned off, but it is too late for that now. I don't think the next generation will be able to save this family.

Others should learn from our mistakes and teach their kids to turn the tv off when there are guests and play host/hostess.
