The Aging Laddoos:
Promise yourself Laddoos,
wait for them, and eat them
and distribute them as they come !

by Mr. Durgesh Kumar Srivastava
(New Delhi, India)

Hellow !

My name is Mr.D.K.Srivastava. Born on 22 Feb., 1943, I was scheduled to retire at the end of Feb., 2005, and receive my first pension at the end of March,2005.

So, I told God _ "Please allow me to receive my first pension and I shall distribute Laddoos among my friends" (Laddoos are sweetened balls of gram flour and powdered sugar, roasted in clarified butter and made into semi hard balls the size of golf balls.)

So, I duly distributed the Laddoos on receiving my first pension. I told God - Please allow me to receive pension for one full year. The wish was granted.

So, more Laddoos were distributed among friends. I now raised my request to God and made it five years. God has helped me distribute Laddoos every year during the last five years.

My friends wait for the annual feast of Laddoos. They wish me to live long. I have upped my demand further. Now I have asked God to let me receive my pension for a total of 15 years, so that I become entitled to receive the restored amount of my commutation of pension (40% of original pension.}.

I am sure God too, like me and my friends, likes the taste of Laddoos. So, here I am waiting, then distributing Laddoos year after year.

In 2020 when the commutation is restored, I will have to find some new excuses to request to God for further extensions. If you email me on my ID kumar220243@yahoo.in I shall send you the recipe for making Laddoos.

If you visit me in India (New Delhi) on the last day of March, you are welcome to have your Laddoos from me and we can also become friends.

I pass my time in reading, a little bit of clumsy creative writing, singing Hindi film songs, seeing movies and TV, watching cricket on tv and playing with kids (2 to 7 years).

My youngest grandson is going to be 7 on 25 July, 2010. He is my best friend. I have two older grandsons (14 Oct.,1995 and 22 July 1997).

My 63 year old wife is a home maker and somehow does not share my interests. I let her be and live her own life.

I am cheerful and spread cheer among my friends. Do write to me when you have the time, convenience and the mood.

Best wishes!

Retirement: I have tried holding the sands of time in my clenched fist ....
by: Retd. Prof. Mr. Durgesh Kumar Srivastava, New Delhi, India

I came to the end of my working life in February, 2005. Retirement was a blessing, more so since even without work if would give me a regular monthly pension.

I was looking forward to a blissful retired life, with quiet walks in the park, gossiping with fellow retirees, playing with my little grandson, Anirudha (Chhota - 'The Little One') then 2 years in age, seeing old Hindi movies and dozing off to sleep in the night after having sung my favourite film song ?.

Chandan ka palnaa, Resham ki Dori,

Jhoola jhulaaoon, nindiya ko tori ?.

(On a swing made of sandalwood,

Pulling slowly by a silken cord,

I want to lull you to sleep ?.)

I had made my plans. I would distribute among my dear-ones and friends Laddoos after completing every year of my retirement. I had, through an Internet post, invited them, and even strangers, to come and join me for this annual ritual.

Nearly six and a half years have passed since my retirement. I have distributed Laddoos every year. But I am not happy inside my heart. Something is missing. Barely one month into my retirement, I found that one cannot live just doing nothing. There must always be some useful work to do. I had taken up a post-retirement teaching job as a Visiting Reader in Banking & Insurance in a management college. But that job ended in 2010 after my heart bypass surgery.

I then thought that it was the final end of my working life. But I was wrong. Nearly an year has elapsed since my surgery, and I am well and ready to go again. Any suitable jobs for me, O? World!

"Shukriya" (Thank you) dear friends for letting me in your "Circle of Friendship and Love"
by: Mr. D. K. Srivastava from New Delhi, India

Dear friends,

The live publication of my article "The Aging Laddoos ...." couldl not come at a better time.

I have been depressed because of the postponement of my scheduled triple bypass open heart surgery because of raised levels of blood urea etc.

Seeing and reading my article live on retirement-online.com has spread sunshine of joy in my heart and cured me of depression.

When I return home after surgery, I intend to reply to all messages to personally thank you for your comments.

Please note my alternate email ID JiBhaiya -- at -- gmail.com

Please also excuse me for the many errors in my original write up.

D.K.Srivastava, August 04, 2010
