I Used to be a Normal Person

by Tom D
(Plano, Texas)

As a man, I used to think I was pretty much just a regular person, but I was born white, into a two-parent household which now, whether I like it or not, makes me "Privileged", a racist and responsible for slavery.

I am a fiscal and moral conservative, which by today's standards, makes me a fascist because I plan, budget and support myself.

I went to High School and graduated, I got a degree college and have always held a job. But I now find out that I am not here because I earned it, but because I was "advantaged”.

I am heterosexual, which according to "gay" folks, now makes me a homophobe.

I am not a Muslim, which now labels me as an infidel.

I believe in the 2nd Amendment, which makes me a defacto member of the "vast NRA gun lobby”

I am older than 80, making me a useless eater who doesn't understand Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat.

I think and I reason, and I doubt much of what the "main stream" media tells me, which makes me a "Right-wing conspiracy nut”.

I am proud of my heritage and our inclusive American culture, making me a xenophobe.

I believe in hard work, fair play, and fair compensation according to each individual's merits, which today makes me an anti-socialist.

I believe our system guarantees freedom of effort - not freedom of outcome or subsidies which must make me a borderline sociopath.

I believe in the defense and protection of America for and by all citizens, now making me a militant.

I am proud of our flag, what it stands for and the many who died to let it fly, so I stand and salute during our National Anthem - so I must be a racist.

Please help me come to terms with the new me because I'm just not sure who I am anymore!

Funny - it all took place over the last 7 or 8 years of Socialist Democratic control; it’s time to finally get rid of those fools.

If all this nonsense wasn't enough to deal with, now I don't even know which restroom to use… and I gotta go more FREQUENTLY!

IN GOD WE TRUST

Enjoyed your comments; in complete agreement.

Would that John Galt (see speech in Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand) was a real person.

Grateful for others

Glad to see at least some in this group have some critical thinking skills AND spoke up about the poor-me white male whining! Thank you!

You are...
by: Anonymous

Just another 60+ yo white guy complaining about the world changing.

YES!!!!!!
by: Carol/New Mexico

SPOT ON! This is exactly how I feel too. I try to fight off the liberal nonsense by backing monetarily conservative congressional candidates.

I have also spent a great deal of time during this covid period teaching two of my grandsons (5 and 8) about American history. Currently they are learning about the history and meaning of the American flag, flag etiquette, and learning the National Anthem (not just the words but what the words MEAN). There will be NO kneeling in my family EVER!

I’m sorry...
by: Anonymous

I’m sorry that you feel so persecuted. You worked hard to attain your white American status. Be proud of your fascist political ideals and continue to spread the word of ME supremacy throughout the internet of anonymity. You come first before all others.

I just hope that, someday, everyone in the world will be just like you. Keep your chin up, and don’t let the name-calling continue to hurt your feelings.

They’re just jealous of your success and good looks. I’m on your side.

Normal
by: Pat Detroit MI

I subscribed to a newsletter about retirement. Since when did this become a place to to expound political views?

What the country and world is going through now just adds to some of the woes of retirees. I don't want to spend any of my time reading about your political views even thinly veiled as a "funny article".

I am done with this Senior-Online Community. Maybe the editor will better screen items to print from those with White Privilege for readers who have lived a life without such.

Unbelievable
by: Anonymous

Over the years I have looked forward to reading and sharing our experiences about RETIREMENT. Now this has become a place to vent social, political and personal viewpoints???????

I don’t need to come on here for that, just turn on the news. That’s not what this site is for. Wendy you may think about adding some filters or deleting certain post in the future. I'm leaving this community 🙁

Tom, your post is great and I hope you get many people commenting on it.

Good For You. You are a true patriot

Normal People

Tom D.

THANK YOU for your post. You certainly hit the nail on the head. I agree with you 1000% Thank you again for speaking what most of us are thinking.

You can tell how misinformed some of the posters are because they don't even know that we don't have a Democracy, the United States of America is a Republic.

Brilliant Observations
by: Judy, Ontario Canada

Except for the part about a political party being the cause of all your confusion about who you now are (tongue-in-cheek) I thought your observations about what this crazy world is coming to were brilliant! I also appreciated the dash of humor at the end.

This would be a great post on Facebook!

The silent majority
by: Anonymous

Do not worry about it. It is not called the silent majority for no reason. Those who shout loudest on social media don't or can't understand that they are the ones in the minority and we who just get on with our lives are the ones that really matter

Also don't forget that when you cast your vote, nobody is going to have a go at you because they won't know.

I liked and enjoyed all of your comments and observations. I can identify with all of it. I feel like you were describing me. Thank you for your clarity and frankness. You definitely add sanity to the craziness.

Are you Passive aggressive?
by: Love thine enemy

A few of your comments might have been mildly funny if the hot mess of the bulk of it weren't so appalling.

I agree
by: Anonymous

I guess I'm not normal also as I fit your description. Where is the world I grew up in?? We "unnormals" need to be strong and keep our morals and stay positive. This won't last forever. The tide is changing and all this corruption is about to be exposed.

Plano whine should come down
by: Disappointed

I am firmly with PLP Green Bay in the vein of civility, politeness, and treating others humanely. I am so disappointed in you people who think you DESERVE all your good fortune! Ever heard the saying " there, but for the grace of God go I"? We are incredibly blessed to be first world citizens and we need to fight for our threatened democracy and for the rights of people of color on whose backs much of the wealth of the US has been built. Instead of whining about your "hardships" you should be the hero you think you are and stand up for our fellow oppressed citizens. I am appalled at Plano's piece and maybe even more so at all but one of the commenters. How depressing! No wonder we have the "President" (king?) That we do! Shooting rubber bullets at peaceful protesters so he can waddle to a photo-op brandishing a Bible???? I pray for you, especially for our country and our threatened Democracy. My ancestors fought in the Revolution for this nation. Please don't destroy it with self-centered ignorance.

Really
by: PLP green bay

Since when is a political sound out. And as for you, get over yourself. Yes, we white had an advantage. There is no sense telling you because you think you worked for it; like no one else has. Of course we worked but we also got the OPPORTUNITY, the American gift, to make it and if we were smart enough, we did.

Stop this OLD FOOL poor me, now I am labeled this or that.

We were lucky, some not so lucky. Color of skin mattered.

Normal Person

Just had to comment and thank you for your article. The isolation for the last three months has gotten me down. Your article gave me a laugh (was I supposed to laugh?) It was very well thought out, and hit the nail on the head!

Unfortunately and sadly what you wrote is so true. and hopefully we will find a "new normal" that will allow everyone to appreciate each other and make the world a better place for those who come after us.

Thank you, Tom

Thanks, Tom for having the courage of your convictions to put them into your post. I agree with every word that you wrote and appreciate your will to state it openly. Truly a rare quality these days.

Used Be Normal
by: Elna Nugent , Lenox, MA our Name/Location

Hello: YOu seem to have reached a period of life
when you are ready to be who you really are....
and decide to thoroughly enjoy it.

I hope you decide to be glad you are who you are
and relish this time in your life.

I love this time of life because we don't have to
be so called normal.

Let it all happen, Elna

Another Normal Person
by: Jane Curtis/Texas

I could not agree more with you. I have been called so many names the last ten days it is hard to know what I am any more. You get in trouble now days for walking to a church and holding up a bible.

I tell them that is okay, I want to tell them how lucky they are they waited till now to call me that. I promised just last week in church... I would stop shooting people for calling me that. Yes, in deed, they are might lucky.

A teen got impatient with me in line the other day. I said to go tell it to Tweety Bird. He corrected me, "Lady, that is twitter." I looked at him and I said, "Son, are you behind the times. Tweety Bird has it all over twitter... hands down. I mean Tweety Bird even has Sylvester on his side now." I looked him up and down and gave him my, you are really dumb look. He instantly started searching his phone for Tweety Bird. He got out of line and went to another group of kids. They all started looking for Tweety Bird.

I laughed all the way to the car. Who says we have lived too long? We have lived long enough to still know what it means to be an American, to be loyal, and to out fox them any time we want.

Love your blog. Thank you for sharing.
