Buy a Blog Name

You Need a Niche first

You really should choose a niche before you register a blog, so if you haven’t done that yet, read more on discovering your blog niche here.

If you know your niche for a real blog/website platform, where there are many ways you can earn an income, you'll need two things before you start.

Choose a Platform

Solo Build It

I use Solo Build It and have since 2004... with SBI, you don't need to get a domain or web hosting as both come with the website you are purchasing.

Wordpress

Many people like to use Wordpress.org because they are cheap... they do well if you take the time to learn how to use wordpress. I don't care for it. I had too many issues and it frustrated me too much. However, many do like it.

There are many places on the web to purchase - but I am offering the website providers I've used as I know how to guide you through them. Read on and learn what you need to do, then either register through my links or find your own online.

Remember this: If you intend an income from your Blog, Remember, for the small fees below... you are purchasing An Online Business.

Buy a domain name

I've used www.Godaddy.com for years now. This is where I purchase the domain name, not the site. "retirement-online.com" was purchased here. I pay an annual fee to own this domain name, like your internet address.

If you'd like to check out domain names, even if not yet quite ready to register, you can play with godaddy. Many names are already taken, so it's not always easy to find your name.

You'll see Start Your Domain Name Search here, where you can enter different ideas for your blog name. GoDaddy will show you if the name is available, or not. They also show versions of the name that are available. Be patient, keep trying different names, you will find one that fits your idea!

I only search for .com addresses. There are many others available, but .com is the best. Most folks don't even think of other extensions, so if they KNOW my site is "retirement online", they automatically add the .com.

EXAMPLE: Let's say you buy Boomer-Women.net and your visitors love your site. They might even think you've quit the site if they visit boomer-women.com and you are not there (because you are at boomer-women.net).

Some website owners buy all the popular versions of the site name, to secure so another person can't get their branded name. I've never done that but you MIGHT consider that if you'd like to own the .net version too.  You write one site, and "redirect" the second version to the first site.

Again, finding your perfect site name is not so simple. There are millions of blogs and websites out there. Below your search results (if the site name is not available) are more ideas (from Godaddy) based on your search and sometimes that helps.

If not, just keep entering different blog names until you find one you llike. Find several, write them down, and come back later when you make the big decision to register -- meaning BUY your blog name.

I used boomer-women.com in the example - other possibilities are:

  • boomerwomen.com
  • boomerwoman.com
  • boomer-women-rock.com

Many times, your idea is taken... gone gone gone years ago! The good ones are all taken! Yep... you need to be creative!

If possible, find a SHORT and MEMORABLE NAME.  You want people to remember you... right?

Here are more off the top of my head ideas on a new theme:

  • boomers on the move
  • rv boomers
  • retired&touring
  • usa retired travel
  • 2 retired in rv
  • boomer artists
  • boomer boaters
  • boomers who work

Just keep thinking creatively on what you want to call your new business - your website/blog!

Buying a blog name really means you are buying virtual real estate on the web!  Go play with www.Godaddy.com and see what's out there. It's fun!

Find Website/Blog Hosting

First, I use SBI for this site, so I don't need to pay for hosting. Just wanted to be sure you understand.

For my word press sites, I use MomWebs.com as of my online business friends do. I pay $10 per month for 4 different sites.

Great Deal.

How to Connect your Go Daddy domain name with MomWebs hosting:

Support will help you here. This is the part I always hated… but support will come through for you!
