Need to move to afford retirement

(CA)

My wife and I live in CA. I am 65 and she just turned 60. We've come to the conclusion that we cannot afford to retire here completely.

Our grown children and grandchildren have little to do with us. Daughter and family (3 grandchildren) live 20 minutes away and can barely make it on holidays because she is so "busy". We know this is not true. Grown son has 2 young daughters, no wife and no real direction in life.

We are an ATM. We love our children and grandchildren but it's clear they take us for granted.

We plan to move to NC or SC and buy a house for cash. We won't have to work unless we want to.

We have not told our children of our plans yet. My siblings and lifelong friends are all on the East Coast and are excited about the idea of us moving that way.

I've moved across county before to start a new life and could do it again. As a cancer survivor, I want to live life, not die at my desk.

So sensible!

You sound very logical...many retirees hate to admit (as you did) the kids just don't care.

Pssst! They will care, later, but don't realize it now. And that's ok... come visit, vacation, and go home and thrive without the parental bank.

Go for it. It's not easy to move, but the earlier you move, the younger you are, get with family and friends waiting for you, and can actually retire!

Woot!
