Powering the Greys

by Julie Grenness
(Melbourne, Australia. )

We are reading this story on the internet today, due to the massive reinvention of the digital world. Impacting many seniors, this means the world has changed, and will continue to do to progress for each age group ahead.

Access to the internet from a desktop to a laptop, to an Ipad, to a smartphone, has opened windows to the world for many of the greys we are.

We are all powered up in some ways, always adapting our senior brains to try to master new devices. We should say more often, "Let's power up the greys!"

Communication now is wonderful, sharing on social media, or making use of smart home appliances and apps to make life easier. I love my browsing, but can waste time reading online ideas, such as good recipes, or how to adapt some craft patterns.

Being old style, I transcribe a Youtube demo, then type it in large print, for my dimming vision.

There are many online communities for aging greys, such as creative writing, or faith services, or cross-cultural experiences. Studying online can be free, or cost a fee, depends on what is available.

I studied online to gain a Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I have since retired from tutoring, but still maintain an online "micro-business'. I write occasional Resumes and Cover Letters for clients. I advertise for free, so there are no overhead expenses. Nothing too proactive.

Many entertainment websites for our age group exist, like online puzzles, or even online gaming. Modern seniors can be fully engaged in doing 'other things', Their latest project is online gaming.

We gal pals on Facebook hope to have some wisdom to decide if we want to play card games, or if it is a scam. The digital world has opened the field for scammers to target greys, or others. So we must take precautions if approached, either on social media, on our phones, of on emails. This is virtual reality.

If we seniors wish to be active, our digital world can link us to activities, such a Yoga classes or a dance challenge. See if these suit our retirement, before joining real world community groups for fun.

We can adapt to sports and exercises, have a quiet chuckle. Active retiring means motion is lotion! We are alive, awake, alert and breathing, let's hope so.

Keep on keeping on, powering the greys!
