Senior Pen Pals is something that I love

by Linda Hamill
(Covina, CA, USA)

The year was 1980 ~ we had just moved into our new home on the Central Coast ~ it was the most perfect home and in the future years we thought it would be our "Senior" retirement home ~ It was small so easily cleaned ~ the views were spectacular and I spent many hours planting new flowers and grasses and a great veggie garden.

However that was not enough for me ~ I didn't know anyone in the area and didn't know what to do with all my FREE time ~ Jobs were scarce and friends even more scarce ~ so, what to do!!! ~

Walking into a local card store while downtown, I found several cards for the upcoming holiday ~ I noticed an add from American Greeting Cards ~ buy three cards and get the names of three Pen Pals selected for you ~ I bought the cards, put in my critical information and got the names of three ladies in Australia (Mother's homeland) ~ Like I said, the year 1980 ~ over 30 years ago ~ and my Pen Friendships and card writing began ~ It was such a wonderful feeling when I rec'd three return letters in my mailbox ~

That was the beginning and today I am still writing to (2)two of those three original ladies who are still Australian residents ~ Since those original days I have had well over 200 different female writers ~ For every time & season, as the saying goes, ~ they came and went, stayed long time friendships, short term friendships and different friendships over all those many years ~ Several have passed away and some have gotten through dreadful illnesses or divorced, lost children and so on ~ but all through those times, I was a friend from the "mailbox" who cared ~
I really have loved all these years of my life and would not want to change a thing ~

I learned so much from my Pen friends and hopefully they learned from me ~ we grew older, grew up laughing and smiling while drinking our cappuccinos and enjoying the reading of our letters outside on the veranda and getting excited to write back to each of those ladies and tell them about our new and current news about our Grandchildren, even great grandchildren and what is going on not only in our lives but those we love and have nursed along with us during our Senior Years ~

It has been an awesome ride and I would never change it for anything else.

Well, that is my story and I am ending it saying Welcome friends ~ Want a new Pen Pal?

Remembering 1980’s
by: Linda Helen

I wrote a letter to find new friends via this page. I put out my e-mail address so others could write back to me. I never got any answers. Sooooo, I thought I would try once again on here. My e-mail address is: XXX@aol.com (Wendy has deleted the email address--it is not safe to put it online here). Please join the private Community of 2000+ retirees for new friends!

I am older now and still love to read letters sent to me and write to other friends. If anyone feels they would like to write, put Retirement OnLind in the Subject and I will write back to you, via e-mail.

Spring is around the corner. I am ready for spring flowers and more warm temps. Hope to hear from someone. Linda H

I just wanted to let you know that each person I wrote back to after reading their letters here have not really kept in touch ~ once they find out we are on FaceBook, they stop writing and just chit chat through that site ~ so actually, no one has kept up with chatting and I am, once again, lacking Pen friends, lol (smiling) Just thought I would let you know Wendy.

Wendy Thanks Linda! I do have a Retiree group on FB, I thought maybe pals would be easier there as you can see they are "real" people (not scammer emails), but few join it! sorry!

WOW, it is Dec 30th ~ almost the end of 2011 ~ Isn't it hard to believe that the year is turning over fast ~ hello 2012 ~ with all the things we have heard about happening during the new year, well it seems like we all are in for a "ride" as they say ~ and hopefully a good ride with a great year beginning ~ so far, we have 80 degrees and it will stay that way all week ~ lucky us, ha!

Ok, if anyone wants to write me, please put your name and that you found me in this senior Pen Pal
page.

Linda's letter

Linda ~ Loved your letter and it made me want to sit down and answer the minute I finished reading it. Wish I had seen that card offer yrs ago as I love to write letters but love more to receive them. The idea of keeping in contact with people be it by computer or "snail mail" has always appealed to me and I do have friends I have kept in touch with for 50 years. I think it all started back when I was a teenager and had a pen pal in England. Have a great day. Please write back if you have the time.

Enjoyed your Intro Letter
by: Karen Jo in Florida

I'd love to be pals if you have space and time for one more. I think this site is great, it links people to others and what becomes are great friendships and lasting friends.

I live in Florida with my dear husband Gary, we will be celebrating our 43rd anniversary on October 20th.

We have two sweet dogs 18 mos old. Both are Maltese and Long Haired Chihuahua mix, they are so much fun and are great lap dogs.

I teach crochet at our local library and have for the past 15 years, we meet for three hours 5 to 8 pm and have a group of ladies any where from 8 to 12.

If you would like to correspond let me know.

Dear Linda

Your letter was so touching it brought tears to my eyes. Penpaling is something that I always wanted to do but was hesitant. Therefore I always postponed it. I recently found this site and I fell in love with it, took a chance which I don't regret. I have since met a bunch of lovely, caring ladies. I have learned that sometimes the relationship that we develop with people who are far away can be stronger than that with those nearby. A simple "Hello", "How are you today", "Just drop you a line a line to see how you are doing" go a long way.

God bless Wendy for bringing us together. Anyone who thinks of doing this kind of work must have not only a love for people but a special place in her heart for seniors.

Wendy: WOW... this is why I do what I do! It's lots of work but so well worth it and I love hearing that someone DID find new friends! Thanks!
