Collect Social Security on an Ex Spouse?

by Ollie Gray
(Mart, Tx)

Can a person, at 62, collect on an ex spouse that is 63?

Wendy: Yes, call Social Security for an appointment at 1-800-772-1213 -- even if you aren't quite ready yet, get answers so you know where you stand when you are ready.

Tell them you were married (you need at least ten years in marriage), and they will calculate both your own benefit based on your own wages AND his benefit (you get 50%)... you automatically get the highest benefit of the two!

Remarried but can I collect my former husbands social security?
by: Brenda

I was married for over 11 years and would like to know if I can collect my ex-husbands social security even though I have remarried? Am I allowed to change it later back to me or my current husband?

Wendy: No, if you are married you cannot go back to the ex-spouse's benefit. So sorry!
