Don't Retire

Are you sure you want to retire? I challenge you to think twice -- as a Pre-Retirement Planning Speaker did years ago...

The instructor asked the class, "Who can't wait to retire?"

As you'd expect from a Pre-Retirement class, lots of hands went flying into the air!

Then she issued a challenge:

Don't Retire!

Definition of Retirement from Websters Dictionary

  • The act of retiring, or the state of being retired; withdrawal; seclusion; as, the  retirement of an office
  • A place of seclusion or privacy; a place to which one withdraws or retreats; a private abode.
  • Syn: Solitude; withdrawment; departure; retreat; seclusion; privacy.

Withdrawal from Life? Retreating to a private place, like hiding out in your home?

That's NOT a great retirement for anyone!

The speaker went on to challenge attendees to leave employment, but don't retire as defined above.  Instead, look for new challenges, new purpose, having fun!

Don't "Retire" From Life... Instead Retire To Something!

Does this advice sound a little odd coming from someone who LOVES retirement? If so, read just a few of the stories from the anxiety and depression after retirement pages.

We need to be active, we need to plan how we'll spend our time each day.

This article from the Financial Philosopher website talks about how everyone truly has their own definition of retirement... and I really believe that.

I challenge you NOT to retire --
Redefine yourself, Renew yourself --
but Please do not "Retire".

Stop working at your current employer, your current full time pace, but please do not "retire".... a withdrawal from life is a wasted retirement.

Find new pleasures in life, fun things to do, don't waste your precious retirement time here on earth!  There are so many retirement hobbies,  and many other things to help you keep busy.
