Answering the "Who Am I Now? question in Retirement...

by Eckert Tolle

A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose from Amazon could greatly help you. A New Earth has really helped me to find peace - Retirement Peace! I kid you not... I love this book!

This book is not about retirement. It IS about serenity and peace in life and quieting that negative self-talk, that voice in your head. Many retirees could really find a more content, peaceful retirement if they knew how... thus my review here.

My copy of this book is well used. I highlighted the important parts (important to ME). I also studied it with millions of other folks from around the planet using an Oprah webinar, chapter by chapter, with the author.

Folks worldwide tuned in to ask questions on the books concepts... to find their own peace in life. It was a huge online workshop in 2008 and the author will explain parts you didn't quite get.

Now, why do I think this is a great book for Retirees?

Chapter Three of A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose says: "Most people are so completely identified with the voice in the head - the incessant stream of involuntary and compulsive thinking and the emotions that accompany it - that we may describe them as being possessed by their mind. "

If you continually worry, complain about your retired lifestyle... this really can help you!

You can listen the Chapter 3 class here:

Chapter 3 class on Oprah's site

Listen to the chapter discussion above, one guy early in the presentation really gets into WHY this is his new Life Manual. I love it!

This whole book can be read, while you watch weekly webcasts found on Check out: Oprah's website... the nice part about that is that you can hear real people questions and Eckert's answers. Weekly webcasts for every chapter -- and folks from around the world tuned in and skyped in to talk questions about finding internal peace.

IT really still help you to stop that voice in your head... all that self talk isn't doing you any good.

OK, So now My Challenge for Retirees:

  • If YOU are someone who thinks negative thoughts all day, if you are "complaining in the head" all day -- it has no real purpose. It's not meant to bring about change to your retired life. So why think those thoughts? (yes I know its not easy to turn them off).

  • If you worry all day, consider this. Eckert also says: "WORRY is continual mental noise... WORRY pretends to be necessary... But it has no useful purpose". Sooo true and just think of the hours so many of us spend lying in bed, unable to think, worrying... and yet that worry cannot change things.

    Do This:

First, listen to the chapter link above. Just one chapter to see if this is for you. Be sure to try the beginning meditation Eckert does for a few moments too... simple SILENCE, listening and concentrating on your breath, helps.

Second, on your daily walk, washing the dishes, doing some non-thinking chore... instead of letting those negative voices continue on, make NEW subconcious thoughts:
I am a healthy happy retiree.
I love my retirement and the freedom it provides me.
Retirement is great, wish everyone could have fun like me.
I need new interests and the world is full of possibilities: my eyes are wide open.

IF you do this, day after day, the negative voices will go away and the new "retirement is great" thoughts will appear normally. You immediately look for something very different in life.

For a few dollars, I really truly think you can find peace and contentment in your own retirement, like I did!

    Best Wishes!

    A New Earth
    by: James

Thanks for the information regarding A New Earth, Wendy. I downloaded a sample onto my Kindle. It's quite a serious look at life and people's attitude, thinking. Not sure if I will purchase a full copy, yet.

Thought I'd let you know about another book I recently read and found interesting and informative: Freedom From Loneliness: 52 Ways To Stop Feeling Lonely, by Jennifer Page. It's not as depressing as the title suggests. One reviewer sums it up pretty well: "a positive and practical guide to living a more fulfilled life whether you have feelings of loneliness or not ... an enjoyable read with lots of tried and tested ideas about making the most out of life."

It's not aimed at retirees, but it has some useful ideas, thoughts for those who are retired. Cheers, James

Wendy: thanks James.. will look into the book you suggested! Appreciate it!
