Retirement /Coronavirus

by Annie
(Illinois)

On July 1, I will have been retired for six years! I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every single day of my retirement.

I enjoyed my job, but I also knew when it was time to leave. I wanted to leave while I was still healthy enough to enjoy retirement. No, I am not rich, or in the best of health (although my health is good for a 66 year old,).

I have been able to travel a little, work in my yard, serve my Community , and just enjoy my life. I visited older neighbors in the Nursing Home until the Virus occurred, I go out once a month for lunch with my friends and serve on several Boards.

Because of the Virus, I spend most of my time now watching TV, reading, trying new recipes and texting, emailing friends to make sure that they are okay. I go out once a week for necessary items and I take my neighbor with me so she can shop as well. She doesn’t have transportation and I do.

I am very grateful for everything in my life and I always remember to thank God!

TV - not good for the soul
by: Chandler, AZ

When the pandemic started, I watched or listened to every word spoken and watched every TV show and briefing to get the news.

I now find that I am watching very few news programs and listening to fewer talk shows. It's not hard to see how the media is trying to mold our views and feed us disturbing and questionably accurate info.

I have the info the suggestions and the guidelines. Now I'll choose what I feel is relevant and live my life accordingly, doing what makes sense without the scare tactics.

Good health to everyone. Stay safe!

Finding Myself in Retirement
by: Anonymous

Good Job... I have been retired for 5 years now and everyday is a challenge to feel fulfilled as I did with my job.

It's been a long transition.. one thing I've discovered.. it's not much different than working . there are still challenges that need to be met.. still fulfilling days to be enjoyed.. just a different time and place in my life.

Stay strong.. be mindful.. be understanding.

Seamless Transition
by: Joe W

Amen! It looks like you made a seamless 6-year transition to retirement.

It's all about trying new things to find out what you like to do with your surplus time.

I think that there is a benefit to the coronavirus pandemic. It gives an opportunity for 50+ people to take a 'test run' at what a challenging retirement life might look like.

People near retirement will also find out what their retirement planning skills are like before retiring in a more formal way.

Good Luck!

Don't watch television - chat with friends via Zoom
by: Bernard Kelly - Geelong

Hello Annie (Illinois)

Personally I don't like television - because they are shaping our thinking.

Except of course those travel documentaries - they're OK I suppose, but game shows take us nowhere.

However here's a radical thought - Why not try Zoom for all your social connectivity - it's very easy to use, and your counterparty only needs to have a computer (although a built-in camera does help).

cheers

Bernard Kelly
